Rudi Affolter and Gwen Tighe have both experienced strong religious visions. He is an atheist; she a Christian. He thought he had died; she thought she had given birth to Jesus. Both have temporal lobe epilepsy. Like other forms of epilepsy, the condition causes fitting but it is also associated with religious hallucinations. Research into why people like Rudi and Gwen saw what they did has opened up a whole field of brain science: neurotheology. The connection between the temporal lobes of the brain and religious feeling has led one Canadian scientist to try stimulating them. (They are near your ears.) 80% of Dr Michael Persinger's experimental subjects report that an artificial magnetic field focused on those brain areas gives them a feeling of 'not being alone'. Some of them describe it as a religious sensation.

His work raises the prospect that we are programmed to believe in god, that faith is a mental ability humans have developed or been given. And temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) could help unlock the mystery.

Religious leaders
History is full of charismatic religious figures. Could any of them have been epileptics? The visions seen by Bible characters like Moses or Saint Paul are consistent with Rudi's and Gwen's, but there is no way to diagnose TLE in people who lived so long ago. There are, though, more recent examples, like one of the founders of the Seventh Day Adventist Movement, Ellen White. Born in 1827, she suffered a brain injury aged 9 that totally changed her personality. She also began to have powerful religious visions. Representatives of the Movement doubt that Ellen White suffered from TLE, saying her injury and visions are inconsistent with the condition, but neurologist Gregory Holmes believes this explains her condition.

Better than sex
The first clinical evidence to link the temporal lobes with religious sensations came from monitoring how TLE patients responded to sets of words. In an experiment where people were shown either neutral words (table), erotic words (sex) or religious words (god), the control group was most excited by the sexually loaded words. This was picked up as a sweat response on the skin. People with temporal lobe epilepsy did not share this apparent sense of priorities. For them, religious words generated the greatest reaction. Sexual words were less exciting than neutral ones.

Make believe
If the abnormal brain activity of TLE patients alters their response to religious concepts, could altering brain patterns artificially do the same for people with no such medical condition? This is the question that Michael Persinger set out to explore, using a wired-up helmet designed to concentrate magnetic fields on the temporal lobes of the wearer.

His subjects were not told the precise purpose of the test; just that the experiment looked into relaxation. 80% of participants reported feeling something when the magnetic fields were applied. Persinger calls one of the common sensations a 'sensed presence', as if someone else is in the room with you, when there is none. Horizon introduced Dr Persinger to one of Britain's most renowned atheists, Prof Richard Dawkins. He agreed to try his techniques on Dawkins to see if he could give him a moment of religious feeling. During a session that lasted 40 minutes, Dawkins found that the magnetic fields around his temporal lobes affected his breathing and his limbs. He did not find god.

Persinger was not disheartened by Dawkins' immunity to the helmet's magnetic powers. He believes that the sensitivity of our temporal lobes to magnetism varies from person to person. People with TLE may be especially sensitive to magnetic fields; Prof Dawkins is well below average, it seems. It's a concept that clerics like Bishop Stephen Sykes give some credence as well: could there be such a thing as a talent for religion?

Brain imaging
Sykes does, though, see a great difference between a 'sensed presence' and a genuine religious experience. Scientists like Andrew Newberg want to see just what does happen during moments of faith. He worked with Buddhist, Michael Baime, to study the brain during meditation. By injecting radioactive tracers into Michael's bloodstream as he reached the height of a meditative trance, Newberg could use a brain scanner to image the brain at a religious climax.

The blood flow patterns showed that the temporal lobes were certainly involved but also that the brain's parietal lobes appeared almost completely to shut down. The parietal lobes give us our sense of time and place. Without them, we may lose our sense of self. Adherants to many of the world's faiths regard a sense of personal insignificance and oneness with a deity as something to strive for. Newberg's work suggests a neurological basis for what religion tries to generate.

Religious evolution
If brain function offers insight into how we experience religion, does it say anything about why we do? There is evidence that people with religious faith have longer, healthier lives. This hints at a survival benefit for religious people. Could we have evolved religious belief? Prof Dawkins (who subscribes to evolution to explain human development) thinks there could be an evolutionary advantage, not to believing in god, but to having a brain with the capacity to believe in god. That such faith exists is a by-product of enhanced intelligence. Prof Ramachandran denies that finding out how the brain reacts to religion negates the value of belief. He feels that brain circuitry like that Persinger and Newberg have identified, could amount to an antenna to make us receptive to god. Bishop Sykes meanwhile, thinks religion has nothing to fear from this neuroscience. Science is about seeking to explain the world around us. For him at least, it can co-exist with faith.

The last two decades of the twentieth century saw Dostoyevsky's first question regarding the reality of God, being given special interest by the scientific community. Ever since Dr. Wilder Penfield in the 1950s began his famous research into the brain's programming by applying mild electric current on the brain's cortex, the temporal lobe areas have been of special interest. Of particular interest has been the spatial hemispheric side where the Jamais vu and the Déjà vu centers are found. After Dr. Penfield published his findings in 1975 in the book THE MYSTERIES OF THE MIND, we have seen innumerous literature on this riddle, culminating in such writings as that of Dr. Melvin Morse's in 2000 published, WHERE GOD LIVES.

With the end of the century then came the unofficial recognition of these brain faculties, primarily the Jamais vu centers, as being the brain's God receptacle, or antenna, or faith faculty. A lead article in NEWSWEEK, GOD IN YOUR BRAIN, in the May 14th issue then summed up the situation on the findings quite considerably. These were primarily produced by research in the Californian Sand Diego University by Professor Vilayanur Ramachandran, and the Canadian Laurentian University, where Dr. Michel Persinger is leading the field.

The NEWSWEEK article made the question; "Does Science Make Religion Unnecessary?" a major issue resulting from these findings, but for the scientist the major issue regarding this brain faculties remained the two questions; Why do we have these brain faith faculties?, and Why do they function so different in different individuals? The riddles of the human brain's spatial hemisphere are not new and have been prominent for the past century. Some neurologists and brain specialist, correctly, go so far as to claim this be the final mystery of the brain. Owing to the fact that the observer is a part of the quantum experiment and with a view to several disputed riddles in quantum mechanics and theoretical physics, this is also claimed to be the final riddle of all our sciences; The final frontier of science.

Many answers to the two questions posed by the neuro-physiologists are being projected by learned academics, however, none of them has succeeded in producing an all-encompassing and convincing answer; much the less any proof. On Thursday the 17th of April 2003, BBC HORIZON presented a program titled GOD ON THE BRAIN, which highlighted the two riddles in discussions with research subjects, researchers and clergymen, however, no substantial answers came--only opinions. To the scientists the answers remain as elusive as ever.

As we may read in the BBC HORIZON article GOD ON THE BRAIN, it becomes clear that the old question of "Did God create Man, or did Man create God?" Dostoyevsky's is still alive and well, but the work by Professor Gregory Holmes of the Dartmouth Medical School "raises the prospect that we are programmed to believe in god, that faith is a mental ability humans have developed or been given". The first solution to this riddle was answered in the early nineties, with the aid of the QF-theory, when its author, who had learned of the discovery of the "dynorphines" in the early eighties, connected their production to the research findings on the brain's Jamais vu and Déjà vu centers. It was in 1960 that the Chinese American, Dr. Ho Li, isolated for the first time a neurotransmitter that turned out to have 40 times the inhibitory powers of morphine. He gave it the name "Beta-endorphin" and completed his scientific reports but failed to show that it actually was the brain's number one neuroinhibitor and mental-spiritual pain relief and at the same time, the reward for positive altruistic actions; he thus missed the Nobel Prize. It would be 15 years later that two Aberdeen molecular biochemists, Dr. John Hughes and Dr. Hans Kosterlitz, were awarded the Nobel Prize for this discovery.

Research into the endorphin family of neurotransmitters has had a fast progress and in the eighties a variation of endorphins was found that was 700 times more potent than morphine and given the name "dynorphine". This molecule was produced in the brain during death and it has raised a lot of questions amongst the biologists, since any chemicals that are; say, about 200 times stronger than morphine, will wipe out any conceivable sensation of pain in the brain. The discovery lead to some medical students in the US beginning to produce states in each other that represented a technical approach to an actual death-state, this in order to experience the intoxicating rush of the dynorphines. A motion picture was made of this and given the name FLATLINERS. The question; "What is nature doing with such powerful chemicals in the death process?" is surely a difficult one, but even more difficult is the question; "How has such a process evolved in the nerve system, if it only takes place during death." If these chemicals are only produced during death, then obviously, we can envisage no "selection of the fittest" process being involved here. Individual men would have to die many times for such an evolution to take place... no, no,,, to try to rationalize this is rubbish. What this is telling us is that if this is correct, then it constitutes the strongest proof that; "it is not our cultural doing that we have evolved the Jamais vu faith faculty of the brain", as for example Sigmund Freud and Richard Dawkins are trying to tell us. Rather that it is nature who has given this faculty to us, but that is something that our sciences have no explanation for. Many of those who have survived a "near death-experience" are not surprised at this discovery and the famous experience of Dr. David Livingstone being bitten by the lion and just before his guides came and shot the beast that was killing him, he began to feel extremely well and to have pleasant feelings of kinship with the lion and even of loving it. In the QF-theory, this production of the powerful dynorphine neuroinhibitors is explained through the Jamais vu center whose "program" is in every DNA-molecule, down to its atomic reality, with its focal-area in the brain's spatial temporal lobe. This then brings us to the other side of this coin. If we have not created God, or rather the brain's faith faculty, then the question becomes; "What is it in nature that requires us to have this faculty?"

With the--in 1998 introduced and in 2002 published--Venn set-mathematical Complete Unification Theory of Everything, and its connection to the Observer's DNA, Life and Consciousness, it has become possible for the first time to answers conclusively, the question posed in the HORIZON program; Is faith: "mental ability humans have developed or been given." It further elucidates the reasons for the difference in the individual brain functions and performance, including the faith faculties. These are analyzes of the reasons for the existence of, and the reality behind, the two mysterious Jamais vu and the Déjà vu centers of the brain. This is credited to the fact that the QF-theory includes a Venn-set symmetry equation, which portraits the state of the Universe at second 10^-36 (The End of the Birth of Time), offering a most powerful and convincing insight into the much speculated "Quantum Wave of the Universe". This equation further turned out to represent at the same time, the symmetry of the electron and the foundation for the fundamental construction principle and programming of the human neocortex. It thus satisfied the famous 1981 demand made by Dr. Steven Hawkings: "I would like to know exactly what happened between 10^-33 second and 10^-43 second. It is there that the ultimate answers to all questions about the universe--life itself included--lies."

The standard dictum regarding research of the human brains programming has been that what ever is found in reality, this has a corresponding function in the brain, and what is found in the brain has a corresponding function in reality. What then is the cause for the faith faculties in the human brain, or better; what is it in reality that requires us to have such a faculty? Is this faculty just developed by our sense of powerlessness over Nature and the events in our lives, developed up through the centuries in accord with the tenants of Darwin's evolutionary findings. In other words; Is this faculty created by our insecurity, fears and nervousness? and just a faculty for a mental and spiritual masturbation to calm our selves in the struggle to survive? The QF-paradigm theory says no. The QF-paradigm says that in fact we could not exist without this faculty and the reality that is behind it represents the 5th and 6th dimensions in the QF-theory of Everything.

The phenomena in Nature--external of the brain--that corresponds to the Jamais vu and the Déjà vu centers are the two, V-negative and V-positive poles in the zero-energy field of the vacuum. The same poles that light dances in and makes a simple gadget like Polaroid glasses work. They are at the same time the reality/dimension out of which all the matter in the Universe has issued or sprung from; The only free lunch ever! as the physicist, Professor Sidney Sheldon describes it. This is the reason for the brain's creative faculties, which are at the same time the faith and compassion faculties, being situated in the spatial hemisphere, just as the two V-poles are in space. Further the QF-paradigm shows us that these two poles have an extended correspondence into the W-negative and W-positive wave functions in every atom of our body, producing the Jamais vu and the Déjà vu centers. It is the extended effects of these waves in the matter/energy particles that produce the gravitational effect in space. They form the gravitons. In a perfectly healthy brain, free of all quantum functional displacements, they not only extend into every DNA but throughout the electromagnetic field of consciousness. In this are to be found the explanations for ALL the extraordinary perception experiences of man. Fundamentally, in the material world, these two V-poles and two W-waves gravitational functions have the effect of producing momentum that brings objects together. In the biological world their extended function serves to bring species together for procreation and enhanced collective survivability.

If this is so, then why is it that the faith faculty part of this function seems to be found only in, or functioning only in, every third individual tested by the researchers. Here it is worth mentioning that this same ratio is also found to be the case with individuals who were used as test subjects for the effects of different "placebo" make-believe-medication. The placebo worked on about one third of the subjects. Here enters the picture the family of the endorphin neurotransmitters, the first neurotransmitters of life, which alcohol, opiates and man made substitutes manage to replace in the brain, with the horrendous consequence of changing the brains fundamental natural programming. Since its discovery in 1960, the endorphins have now grown to a family of over 80 variants, which have been shown to regulate the integrated functions between the central nervous system, the immunity system and the endocrine system. They not only decide the balance of the functions in our brains, thus who and what we are, but decide our ability for health and happiness. It is this "cheating on, or use of false neuro- transmitters" that offers the answers to the riddles of the individual differences in the brain's faith faculties and the variations in placebo effectiveness.

Here it is the QF-paradigm's insight into the fundamental program and function of the human brain, which makes it possible to solve the riddle. The primary key to the solution of this riddle is in the QF-theory's expanded quantum mechanical understanding of the energy quanta of the wave of consciousness, the electro magnetic field of consciousness. A basic tenant of quantum mechanics is that each energy field has its own quanta and here the electromagnetic field of consciousness has the photon, which physics has shown to be the two rallies of matter and antimatter at once. Additionally to these two realties, the QF-theory shows us the matter side of the photon to be wave-realty, continuously moving OUT form a center, and the antimatter side to be wave-realty, continuously moving IN to a center. This thus explains how it is possible for the wave of consciousness to instantaneously be withdrawing information (holistically modulated photon quanta) from the electron orbits of the DNA in the pyramid neuron's, and at the same time be storing information in the same. Through this it becomes clear that it is this twofold field of consciousness that contains and constitutes conscious thought, not the electric discharge of the pyramid neurons. The QF-theory shows us that the electric discharge of the pyramid neurons, is a continual effort at reprogramming the brain and that it is initiated by each neuron "services rendered" in storing and submitting memoirs, as well as the instinct programs. It is by rendering this work that the neurons are supplied with energy and get paid in pleasure.

It is in the little understood complex interplay of the wave of consciousness and the neuro-transmitter exchanges that is made the crucial error that changes the fundamental brain's program, causing its asymmetry and its horrendous differences in performance, in particular regarding the functions of the brain's faith faculties. This takes place in the "failed synaptic
reuptake" and is caused by the polarity of the post-synaptic neuron being erroneously altered by the presence of "false neuro-transmitters". Whiteout going further into the details of this complex process, we can turn to the consequences, which are nothing less that all the negative complaints of man. These are then discussed in the fields of the religions, philosophy, anthropology, psychology and psychiatry and describe the human condition in our film, radio, press and television subjects.

The complex alteration in the overall program is activated and achieved by the equivalence of copying the programs in the "I", or utilitarian (ego-self) orientated material hemisphere's "exon nucleotide bases" and depositing it in the "WE", or altruistic (conscience mirror) spatial hemisphere's "intron nucleotide bases". The resultant of this "alien and erroneously created program" is found in all the aforementioned negative mental diversions of man's thinking, but it is know in humanity under innumerable divers labels. These are found in all the religions and are described as the "dark side of the force", with names ranging from such as: dragon, maya, mara, karma, devil, inherited sin, etc. The more modern once are concepts such as the "super-ego" employed by Dr. Sigmund Freud and "character defects" employed by 12-step programs, with the concept of "filter" being employed by some physicists. This is the concept used by the author of this article.

Since the erroneously deposited program creates an alter ego in the faith and creativity faculty of the brain, this leads to the individual becoming an egoist, with a decreasingly naturally correct regard for others. The consequences of the erroneous negative actions this error program has caused in humanity, is written into books that covers walls of world's privet and public libraries. The best description of this erroneous program deposit is found in the words of Dostoevsky when he said: "If the Devil does not exist, but man has created him, then he has surely created him in is own image and likeness". -- The two most baffling effects the "filter" has are:

a) The filter alters--in the same manner--the brain's programming in other individuals, in the environment of
those with this erroneous program, but these are known as co-dependents.

b) The filter is inherited through the generations according the inheritance laws of Gregor Mendel, which is
now becoming apparent through research into lives of monozygotic twins.

Along with the QF-theory shown holographic construction of the brain, it is this "filter" that has made it so excruciatingly difficult for the researchers to find the brain's fundamental program.

At this stage, the fact that the "WE", or altruistic (conscience mirror) spatial hemisphere's "intron nucleotide base" programs are always initiating all our thoughts (the famous and controversial binding problem experiments), becomes paramount. It means that the in this brain reality initiated thoughts are modified by this "filter" and that the consequence of this is the history of humanity. It has thus, in gradually growing proportions during the past 7000 years, caused the malfunction known as "the asymmetry of the human brain". This in turn has changed man's thinking, which has disrupted the collective altruistic function in his brain and thus changed the course of the history, producing ALL of the outrages and ALL of the curses of the human experience. A process that is now beginning to increase so rapidly that it is even moving the governments of many nations in the western world to come out of the denial and admitting to it. Unfortunately there is nothing our leaders and our scientists can do about these "weapons of mass destruction", the alcohol, opiates and man made substitutes consumption of man. They will first have to acquire the fundamental understanding of the human brain and consciousness, the fundamental quantum mechanical knowledge of what life is, but the problems here involved cannot be overcome by legislative punishment. Then they may understand that the only possibility for a solution is that we all learn about the functions and malfunctions of our brains and how we cause them ourselves. We will have to learn that the alcohol molecule is the deadliest of all drugs. We will have to learn that we will never overcome the growing threat of the other chemicals, without rejecting the alcohol to. We cannot put the alcohol molecule in an acceptable category of drugs. We will in turn have to learn to correct the asymmetry of our brains individually, and learn how to live so that the natural joy-of-life giving endorphins are produced naturally. Not as many doctors are teaching, through the consumption of two shots of alcohol daily.

Unfortunately the fundamental knowledge for the basic programs and functions of the human brain will not be forthcoming from physics or neurological research that is currently being undertaken, but in this the neurological research is dependent on physics. This is not possible without a fundamental physics theory of reality, which can only be achieved through a Complete and Consistent Unification Theory of Physics Paradigm that includes the observer. Here the words of the Nobel physicist Eugine Wigner fittingly ring out "Man will never understand physical reality unless he takes into account the self-reflecting properties of his consciousness.." This is simply saying that no such theory can be a true Theory of Everything, unless it includes the fundaments of the brain. However, efforts at creating such a theory by the physicists have "become bogged down" caused by the all evading "filter" in the spatial hemisphere of their own brains. Just how important is it to discover this fundamental program of the human brain. Here are the 1993 uttered words of the former rector of Harvard University, Professsor Gerald D. Fischbach: "Philosophical inquiry must be supplemented by experiments that are now among the most urgent, challenging and exciting in all of (the history of) science. Our survival and probably the survival of (all life on) this planet depend on a more complete understanding of the human mind." However, the factor that more than anything else will prevent our scientists from discovering the answere to this "Final Mystery" as the British neurologist, Dr. Susan Greenfield describes it, will be the "filter" in the scientist's brains. The conclusion is thus that only a person who has both had this "filter", and gotten rid of it, will "see clearly enough with the brain" in order to be able to make the ultimate insights needed to comprehend the ultimate truth about the Universe, the Observer, Life and Consciousness. It is such an insight the QF-theory of Everything paradigm offers.
